These include Cadbury Castle, thought to be the site of the legendary Camelot, and Windwhistle Hill, just outside Chard which affords inspiring views of the English and Bristol Channels. The region is peppered with countless remote country towns and small villages – the only major industrial town is Yeovil.

The marshy lowlands to the north were once the haunting grounds of the ‘Seo-mere-saetan’, the sea-lake dwellers from whom the county derived its name. The region’s Saxon heritage is also prevalent in towns like Muchelney and Athelney that use ‘ey’: a corrupted version of the Saxon word for island, ‘ea’.

Other historical attractions can be found in places like Ilchester, which is home to one of the oldest maces in Europe. And near the village of Montacute stands Montacute House, a well-preserved building that dates back to Elizabethan times. The Knights Templar is commemorated at Temple Combe and near Cricket St Thomas and Crewkerne, visitors can find links to Horation Nelson. South Somerset’s fascinating heritage is also prevalent in a selection of villages and hamlets.

Cadbury
The pretty villages of North and South Cadbury feature the huge earthwork, Cadbury Castle. It is situated on a hill west of South Cadbury. The castle, thought to be the site of King Arthur’s Camelot, is perhaps the finest prehistoric camp in Somerset, and one of the finest in the UK.

Chard

Somerset’s highest town at around 400 ft above sea level. Outstanding views can bhe had from the nearby Snowdon and Windwhistle Hills. Chard’s 16th century courthouse buildings is the town’s main attractions. Also of note is the Church of St Mary with its 17th century monument to local doctor William Brewer. Historical attractions include the 15th century Church of St Bartholomew with its huge west window and the Jacobean building on Abbey Road, which housed the ancient grammar school, of which Nelson’s flag captain, Captain Hardy, was a pupil.

Cricket St Thomas

Cricket St Thomas is one of the finest estates in the West Country. The Georgian mansion once belonged to the Bridport family who had connections with the great seafarer Lord Nelson, who was a frequent visitor. The large grounds include a popular wildlife park as well as the parish church of St Thomas.

Hinton St George

A village with a warren of narrow lanes, a row of impressive stone houses and a medieval cross with a carving of St John the Baptist. Reminders of its illustrious past are still in evidence around its village green including a collection of Georgian houses. The town hall is also Georgian and houses a 13th century mace, one of the oldest of its kind in Europe. To the north is situated an impressive Tudor manor house with a 14th century chapel and Elizabethan garden.

Ilminster

A major market town that sits at the foot of the Black Down Hills. The Amazon. The ultimate in fun exploration. Even getting to the jungle is an adventure as you travel by boat to your lodge, then sleep under mosquito nets listening to the sounds of the jungle. Look out for monkeys, caiman and bugs galore, so searching for fogs by torchlight and, for teens, there are zip lines and kayak adventures galore. The Tambopata region of Peru has lodges set up for families. What better way for children to learn about nature and the environment than on an unforgettable Amazon adventure.

2. Ruins, ruins ruins. What is not to like about scrambling around ruins on a mountain top? Machu Picchu isn't the only ancient site, the ruins of Pisaq ramble all the way up the hillside with plenty of hidden nooks and crannies to explore, Saxsayhuaman on the hill above Cusco is the biggest fort of them all and a popular spot for local children to play football. Kuelap, in the north of Peru represents a huge fortress of little round houses on top of a mountain; a king's castle if ever there was one!

3. Lima. Don't skip the Peruvian capital if you visit with kids. For a fun way to see the main sights, hop on the open top bus tour of the city center. Lima's excellent galleries such as the MALI and MAC in Barranco have regular outdoor art activities for the whole family, and the cost is less than a dollar. The Malecon is 6 miles of parks on cliff tops overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Hire a bike for a traffic-free ride and spectacular views local paragliders. Near Lima airport is the fort of Callao and the modern, large city zoo. The zoo is arranged in three sections representing the coastal, mountain and jungle areas of Peru; best visited midweek to avoid the crowds.

4. Beaches. The far north of Peru has year round sunshine and warm weather. Mancora Beach attracts families from Peru and Ecuador but, for a quieter, village feel and calmer waters head to undeveloped Punta Sal. Older children will enjoy the surf and kite surfing in this part of the country, and parents will enjoy the fantastic seafood.

5. Animals. The wildlife isn't restricted to the jungle. Sea lions, penguins, boobies and dolphins can be spotted on short, fun boat trips near Lima, at Pucusana, and Paracas National Park. Paddington did indeed come from Peru and you can spot him at the Chaparri Resrve outside Chiclayo. Any trip into the countryside in Peru will bring you close to chickens, guinea pigs, horses, llamas, alpacas, strange hairless dogs and a multitude of hummingbirds.

6. Outdoor activities. If you are visiting Cusco, then softer kid-friendly activities include horse riding in the Sacred Valley and rafting or paddling on inflatable canoes in the beautiful mountain scenery along the Urubamba River.

7. Nazca. See the real lines as featured in Indiana Jones. For lovers of all things gruesome, the deser Cementerio de Chauchilla is littered with mummified remains complete with skulls, hair and teeth. You can see a scale model of the Nazca lines behind the fascinating Maria Reiche Museum. At the Andres Calle Flores Workshop, Toni hosts a funny and informative workshop and kids can make their own Nazca style pots.

Wherever you travel in Peru, families are assured of a warm welcome from the child - loving Peruvians.

Karen uses her years of experience of living and travelling in Latin America to plan customized, great value tours for families of all agesat Into Latin America. Was Cornwall once completely isolated in this way? Times have changed since then and I for one am glad to see the infrastructure of Cornwall improved to be on par with most other parts of the United Kingdom.

I'd like to recommend a couple of places to visit if you are thinking of heading to Cornwall for a couple of days, a long weekend, a mini break or just an idea of what to do for a couple spare days in your holiday in Cornwall.
I would recommend hitting Truro - one of the smallest places in Europe, this place is actually a city, albeit a very small one but with a town like feel! There are tones of places you can get a fantastic tasty warm Cornish pasty and a traditional scone with cool clotted cream.

Be sure to visit the majesty of the Cathedral here, its daunting height and beautiful centuries old stained glass windows are worth the visit on their own! Take a walk down the streets of Truro away from the beaten track, cross the river near by the side of the cathedral and have a wander through the boutique shops tailored with perfect saviours for every occasion.

For evening delights I would eye up one of the fine fooleries around Lemon Street there are perhaps a dozen good places to choose from in this area alone. Night life is quiet and there are some good bars and hall for Cornwall has some good shows and live acts from time to time.

If you have two days - Go to St. Ives, one of my favourite towns in Cornwall and somewhere I head to given any opportunity. St. Ives is in my opinion the typical definition of a Cornish sea side town with all of the trimmings to cater for a holiday maker in every way imaginable. Much like Truro it offers a real holiday experience and the best thing is that its right next to the sea.

Take a walk through the main drag of St. Ives town, keep going towards the beaches and check out the Tate gallery, the view from the top is just fantastic, you should get a taste of where you might want to head from here.

The Cottage Boutique provide quality holiday cottages in St Ives. All cottages can be viewed and booked on-line easily. To read more about St Ives, St Ives beaches and for your Cornish self-catering accommodation visit The Cottage Boutique.

source:http://ezinearticles.com/?A-Weekend-Away-From-The-City&id=6160366

read:toba lake,borobudur temple,komodo island
tuankrabhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01917642103874621402noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3041202180737268720.post-1957455926257452062011-03-31T07:26:00.000-07:002011-06-18T13:06:07.333-07:00holiday:komodo island
The beauty of komodo island

Any time you plan to go to Indonesia, you also have to consider going to Komodo Island. It is ranged from budget hotel, guesthouse run by local people, cottage, bungalow, boutique hotel, luxury villa, to the international 5 star hotels. The accommodation spread up throughout Bali.

Cluster accommodation is not only to be found in crowd/centre tourist area, but also found even at secluded area. Hotel styles vary from traditional style to modern design. The tourists in Bali mostly favour Balinese style hotels. You’ll be easily to find a hotel that suits your needs either beach/lake side, cool mountain area, rice field view, hilltop, riverbanks, tropical garden, traditional village surroundings, town-centred, etc.

However, there are many things to consider when choosing your travel accommodations. The decision could make your trip fun or a disappointment. Choosing the right hotel is a must. Most travellers spend more time in airline ticket reservations and bargains but less time in choosing the right accommodations. Thus they may end up on the wrong side of the bed during their stay.

To get the most out of your hotel accommodations, remember to book as early as possible and make your dates more flexible. Hotels that specialize for business people will consider weekends as off-season. Family vacationers could tap into these special packages during weekends. Primarily, you should choose your hotel based on name, amenities, features, price, packages and location.

Here are some considerations in choosing your best travel accommodations:

1. Accommodations should be family-friendly. Always ask if your hotel offers children activity areas with educational and fun activities supervised by duly trained caregivers.

2. Your hotel should provide a swimming pool for children, day care service, crib rental and child-proof electrical outlets.

3. Stay in a hotel that has electronic room-key cards and has a security viewer installed on their doors.

4. Make it a priority to choose a room on the upper floor.

5. If you're the one who likes to spend more time in your hotel room and the balcony, you should ask for the available amenities and the conditions of the surrounding environment.

6. Depending on whether you're on a private or business trip, ask your hotel about the availability of laundry service, hair dryers, coffee makers, newspapers, free meals, fax machine, bar, cable television, parking, shuttle service, internet connection, etc.

7. The hotel property layout and its location may speak more of its surrounding environment. Noisy locations such as construction on adjacent property, car traffic and noisy waterfalls are not specified on hotel flyers. So be sure to ask about it.

8. Beautifully landscaped surroundings with trees, flowers and inner courts also enhance your travel pleasure. Moreover, gift shops and restaurants all add up to a wonderful travel experience.

9. The location of your hotel with respect to main attraction is equally important. It could save you money on taxi and bus fare.

10. Make sure that the room service is provided 24 hours a day.

11. Check out the room itself. Is it brightly coloured or classical? It sets the mood of your travel.

In order to get the most out of your travel, whether for business or family vacations, be sure to know everything about the hotel you are planning to check in to. Ask friends and relatives who have been there. Don't just depend on the hotel's web page, which is undoubtedly biased. Having to stay in a hotel, which you don’t like, could ruin your trip.

source:http://www.articlecity.com/articles/travel_and_leisure/article_1244.shtml

read:toba lake,borobudur temple
tuankrabhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01917642103874621402noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3041202180737268720.post-512664375036278382011-03-31T03:24:00.000-07:002011-06-18T13:16:31.551-07:00borobudur temple

borobudur temple
Every year I look forward to taking the family away for our yearly vacation. I love everything about vacation time, well almost everything. I don't especially like picking a vacation spot.

You'd think that wouldn't be the case, but it is. You see, I always want to go some place exotic and adventurous but my family just wants to go to the most popular theme park. I can't seem to make them understand that Disney World is pretty much the same from year to year!

So we argue back and forth until usually I cave in. Sure I always have fun, no matter where we go; but I'd like it to be where I want to go a little more often.

But let me tell you, one year I did manage to persuade them to try something a little more exotic; ok - a LOT more exotic. It was pretty spectacular and I'd like to tell you about it today so that you might go there yourself some day.

I'm talking about the borobudur temple.

If you're into ancient temples and exotic ancient history then this is the place for you! You may not have ever heard about it and that's ok because most people haven't.

It's located on the Kedu Plain, which is located in Central Java. Java is a province in Indonesia, over there in Asia. Really, just about anywhere you go in Asia's going to be amazing, especially if you've never experienced that culture before.

Basically this place is an 8th century Temple...a Buddhist Temple to be exact (think large statues of Buddha). The entire temple itself is built in the shape of a Lotus Flower, which is awesome. There aren't many temples like this from that era that are still around today.

There are almost a hundred large statues of Buddha along the walls of the temple. The walls alone stretch almost 8,500 feet in length.

I don't think its a stretch to say that this is one of the most amazing monuments in all of Asia. I don't think many people would argue that! Even if you don't go, do yourself a favor and search around on the Internet a little bit for some pictures of this place. It's spectacular.

This is a vacation for adults as well as children. Your kids will remember this place for as long as they live. With our world shrinking and western civilization become more and more interwoven and dependent on Asia, it's important to explore their rich heritage and the Borobudur Temple is a great place to start. I recommend you start planning your trip right away!

source:http://www.articlesbase.com/destinations-articles/visit-borobudur-temple-for-the-vacation-of-a-lifetime-4156164.html

read:toba lake
tuankrabhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01917642103874621402noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3041202180737268720.post-39440417313836661172011-03-31T03:22:00.000-07:002011-06-18T13:34:02.631-07:00toba lake

World famous is the crater toba lake in the Batak highlands; approximately five hours drive from Medan. toba lake is the largest lake in South East Asia and also one of the most spectacular, surrounded by tall mountains and with the large island of Samosir in the middle.

The centerpiece of North Sumatra, lake toba's bracing climate and magnificent panoramas clear the mind and soothe the soul. For decades a magnet from regional and foreign visitors alike, Toba has developed into a full-featured highland resort while retaining the rustic charm and relaxed ambiance that define Toba's attraction.

There are a lot of must-visited-places around Lake Toba, the top 5 of them are:

1.Ambarita

Ambarita is an ancient Batak tribal village on Samosir Island, in Lake Toba. It is located an hour's walk northwest from Tuk Tuk or about 20 minutes by boat. I visited it together with a small group of AsiaExplorers members.

What makes Ambarita interesting, from an anthropological standpoint, is that during ancient times the Toba Batak people of Ambarita practised a form of carnibalism. What remains today is the cluster of stone chairs where the village elders held council. Whenever an enemy was captured, the elders would invite the rulers of neighbouring villages to a conference, to determine the fate of the victim. The victim is held in behind bars under one of the houses.

2.Parapat

Gateway to Danau Toba, Parapat is a great place to stock up on supplies and enjoy the semblance of an urban existence before plunging into the rugged countryside. This is a necessary stepping stone to some of Indonesia's most interesting backcountry.

Parapat may not have a distinct tourism flavor, but it is well stocked with shops and hotels. Given its status as a secondary transport hub, it's also well connected to the rest of the region.

The pier to the south of town is the launching point for Danau Toba holidays. Ferries shuttle passengers across the lake to Samosir Island, a destination that was once known for its party atmosphere. Today Samosir is much quieter but still well worth the visit.

3.Simanindo

Simanindo is a small Toba Batak village on the northern part of Lake Toba, about 16 km from Ambarita. Tourists come here to view the restored house of the Toba Batak king. This house has since been turned into a museum. In front of the museum is a row of ancient Toba Batak tombs of the ancient Simanindo kings. Just as in Pematang Purba, the Batak kings of Simanindo are Christians. Hence there are Christian motifs in the design of their tombs.

Next to the Simanindo king's house is a replica of a traditional Simanindo Batak village. Here, traditional Batak dances are performed daily at 10:30am and 11:45am to a crowd that is almost always exclusively foreigners, and most likely Westerners. When I was there with a group of AsiaExplorers members, we were the only Asians watching the show.

4.Tomok

A traditional village with beautiful houses and ancient tombs. Tomok is gateway to Samosir and one of the main landing-points on the island. Rows of stalls sell an array of handicraft, traditional ulos cloth and Batak musical instruments. The 200-year-old stone sarcophagus of King Sidabutar built in the shape of a ship is its most famous sight. He was the Batak King that introduced Christianity to the Batak people. It is located a short walk away from the lake. Tomok is also known for the Sigale-gale dance.

5.Tuk Tuk
Samosir Island is accessible by ferry from Ajibata or Parapat. One of the main inhabited areas on the island, Tuktuk has been described as Samosir's answer to Bali's Kuta Beach. Tuk Tuk is the main tourist center on Samosir Island. It is a pleasant place for walking around, shopping and admiring the views over Lake Toba. This popular destination offers scenic views at very low prices. People come here to relax, enjoy the sceneries, eat well and cool down fronm tougher travelling in other areas. Culture is available on certain days and in other nearby villages anyway. Western tunes have replaced the harmonic popular songs of the well-singing Bataks.

source:http://www.articlesbase.com/exotic-locations-articles/must-visited-places-around-lake-toba-3817107.html
tuankrabhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01917642103874621402noreply@blogger.com0
